Rebus
Furniture, Hospitality, Residential, Retail / London / March 2018
Founder of signet-ring maker Rebus, Emmet Smith and Nick Leith-Smith had a vision to create a space which celebrated the making process, materials and the rich craft aspect of the brand. The resulting 2,400 square foot craft space in the heart of Hatton Garden, London’s historical jewellery quarter presents a unique space for collaboration and interaction with the design process.
The window’s elaborate swirling assay-inspired abstract illustration created by Swedish artist Petra Börner draws in the eye and provide a dynamic contrast to the surrounding street. The interiors promote a matrimony of traditional and modern elements, with the rings and jewellery pieces displayed in a way which is part gallery and part cabinet of curiosities, allowing for the discovery and unravelling of the stories behind each piece.
Rebus’ unique clientele from the diverse mix of clients from rappers and graffiti artists to fashionistas and musicians and to those seeking meaningful resonance in a keepsake or heirloom informed the aesthetic of the space. Nick continues: “In each of the distinctive rooms, the colour and rich combination of fabrics, reflect the signet ring’s noble associations, and are a reference to the processional nature as you move through from public to more private quarters – allowing us to play with emotions of discovery and anticipation.”
