Prototypes – The Rug Company Chelsea Harbour Showroom
In retail design, especially for product displays, prototyping isn’t just a step, it’s a smart investment. While tight deadlines might make it tempting to skip, it can be invaluable for avoiding costly delays and ensuring precision. Take a shop display unit, for example. A prototype lets you test angles, durability, and positioning, fixing any minor issues before manufacturing begins. This way we can ensure that the client is satisfied that it will work perfectly for them, before going into full production. Prototyping = better solutions, seamless execution, and superior results.
Listed Buildings: Breathing new life into historic properties
Working with Listed Buildings does not mean we have to disregard creativity, and it does not need to feel constrained or unexciting, however it takes a special approach to make a new mark. At Burlington Arcade we were presented with a classic historical London retail space which turned out to contain a mixture of very fine-looking heritage features and some obvious and unattractive additions. First deciding to retain the best of the existing shop fittings and working with the local authority Conservation Officer to agree sensitive internal adjustments, we were then able to introduce new ingredients which result in a bright men’s shoe display within the characteristic curved shopfront. The visitor is now able to experience the flow of the old staircase and restored views into the arcade from a fresh and comfortable upstairs salon.
Manolo Blahnik: Evolution of the Japanese design from the beginning to now
With the latest opening of Manolo Blahnik in Japan, we pause to reflect on a decade of work in the region. As a studio, we believe design should never stand still but continuously evolve around the customer experience. We sometimes say ‘each shop is a prototype’, and with each of the 18 stores, the core concept has been challenged, leading to bespoke solutions and unique interpretations that respond to the existing architecture, targeted consumer markets and local insights. The original concept started with Manolo Blahnik delivering his inspiration: “Bauhaus Sanitorium”. The resulting interior we conceived for the flagship in the famed Omotesando district, juxtaposed the colour palette and eccentricity of Walter Gropius, with the clinical, utilitarian aesthetic of a Mid-Century sanatorium.
Delivering an award winning new build house on time and on budget.
Our philosophy is to get the essential ingredients in place from the outset Essence – The starting point is always to focus on functionality and a deep understanding of how our client wants to live in their new home – what daily routines, weekly gatherings, and yearly celebrations they envision. The intrinsic nature of the space will reflect the homeowner’s unique needs and aspirations. If a family loves hosting large informal gatherings, the design may prioritise an open kitchen and dining area, while incorporating outdoor spaces for entertaining. Conversely, a household seeking tranquillity might prefer cosy alcoves and quiet corners.
