The new Doha Manolo Blahnik shop is located in the vast Neo–Classical luxury shopping destination Place Vendome. Our starting point as per previous concepts in the Middle East was to delve into historical architectural forms. In this instance, we settled on Muqarnas.
Muqarnas are used as a structural and decorative devise to break down domes and vaults into smaller modules. The result is a complex array of vertical prisms with a downward protrusion resembling natural rock formations. The design incorporates a fluted perimeter from which fit and stack modular display plinths of varying heights. These flutes rise to become Muquarnas as they near the ceiling creating a sculptural roof and incorporating within the prism a pin light for dramatic effect.
The natural theme continues with the rug. The bespoke rug represents the colour and lines of rock strata formations. The upholstered chairs are single-block colours with subtle variations of red and orange. The occasional tables are honed from solid stone blocks.
