Malone Soulier Harrods

, / London / June 2023 / 67sqm

Nick Leith Smith Architecture + Design have designed Malone Souliers first-ever concession in the iconic Harrods department located within the dedicated footwear space, Shoe Heaven store.

The starting point for this concept was a thorough brand analysis. We explored the brand’s interest in organic patterns, sculptural forms and juxtaposition and how the play between hard and soft, straight and round, curves and edges, that have so clearly shaped the product, could be further developed into a 3D environment.

The decorative arched mirrors, architraves and mouldings are directly inspired by the iconic waved Maureen silhouette, the brand’s signature shoe. While the arches convey lightness the shelving is solidly grounded, providing long, streamlined surfaces to present an uninterrupted view of the growing collection. The shelves give the appearance of permanent fixtures but were designed as free-standing pieces to give sustainable longevity to the design should the location of the shop change. Storage is concealed at a low level in discrete cupboards finished with glamourous pale gold trim and plinth.

The off-white colour of the high-shine lacquered shelves is repeated on the walls although this time in a matt finish, intended to create a residential atmosphere. This restrained palette puts the emphasis on form and texture allowing the products to shine while the punctuated pops of tonal pinks and orange bring joy and playfulness to the design. The colour palette was developed as an evolution of the brand’s signature use of pale pink and is seen throughout the undulating display tables, bespoke rugs and seating. The lounge area at the back of the store provides a personal shopping experience with privacy and comfort to try the shoes. The soft curved forms of the bespoke furniture are upholstered in a tightly woven wool re-coloured by the fashion designer Raf Simons.

The completed immersive environment is an expression of ‘less is more’ with a celebration of the brand and their most recognisable designs at its core.
