West Square

/ London / October 2019

This grade 2 listed Georgian house is located in West Square in Southwark. The house belongs to prominent fine art photographer Marcus Lyon and his family and was featured in the Evening Standards Homes & Property (October 2019). The Evening Standard also star featured the project in an article stating: “This extension by NLS proves how innovative you can be with a listed building.”

The key feature and main architectural intervention was to put a high-quality contemporary glass extension on the rear of the building to connect the main living room floors, lower ground and first floor, and provide a spectacular garden living room. The project involved the full refurbishment of the lower ground floor of the property and included: a bespoke kitchen and staircase, entrance hall/maker space, Utility room/guest loo, dining room/living room/garden room.

The extension is a carefully considered and highly crafted piece of architecture in bronze cladding and structural glass. A series of structural steel buttresses responding to the stepped openings in the rear elevation and garden opening.

The result is transformative to how the client and his family use the house and interact with the garden across the seasons.
