Wandsworth House
Residential / London / 2018
This substantial Edwardian residence is located within the Wandsworth Common Conservation Area, an established and highly sensitive urban context requiring a considered architectural approach. A long-standing client of the practice acquired the property in 2016 in an entirely unmodernised condition, with an original internal floor area of approximately 2,600 sq ft.
Through a carefully developed planning strategy and detailed design process, the house was transformed into a generous 4,300 sq ft family home. The scheme successfully balanced heritage constraints with contemporary living requirements, significantly enhancing both the spatial quality and long-term value of the property.
The architectural intervention included extensive two-storey rear and side extensions, a newly constructed basement incorporating a front lightwell to maximise natural daylight, and a reconfigured roofscape with new dormer windows. These additions were sensitively integrated to respect the character of the original Edwardian building while delivering a coherent and modern domestic environment.
Working in close collaboration with the client and their interior designer, the practice refined proportions, layouts and transitions between old and new spaces. This holistic approach resulted in a highly resolved, light-filled home tailored to modern family life. Following completion, the property was sold in 2021, achieving a record price per square foot for the local area, reflecting both the quality of the architectural intervention and the success of the overall design strategy.
