Manolo Blahnik Miami

What began as a playful WhatsApp message – a mesmerising 3D ‘bubble’ motif from Manolo & Kristina Blahnik—evolved into a striking façade concept rooted in optical illusion and precision geometry.
In our early drawings for the latest Manolo Blahnik retail space in the heart of Miami Design District, Florida, the team explored various panel sizes, spacings, shapes, and geometries – experimenting with rectangular and square perpendicular grids, stacked and staggered arrangements, and different diagonal orientations. Ultimately, we opted for a full-width panel layout across both the front and side façades, with minimal joint widths – defining the scale of the pattern.

To refine the design, we carefully graduated the dot size and grid spacing on each panel, testing them with full-scale paper prints. Simultaneously, we explored ways to produce this op-art polka dot effect across various materials, from backlit glass to etched stone, screen-printed metal, pigmented cement, ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), embossed and debossed aluminium, and moulded terracotta. Each concept was rigorously evaluated for feasibility, striking a balance between aesthetics, durability, weight, and cost.

As the design evolved, two-tone solutions continued to emerge as favourites, accentuating the pattern’s depth. After testing multiple colour combinations, monochrome proved to be the clear winner—offering a crisp, timeless elegance.
The façade engineering underwent rigorous City and County Permit approvals. We collaborated with specialist suppliers to prototype the layered panels, ensuring the fixings aligned with on-site constraints and the available build-up zone.
Through this meticulous prototyping process, we finalised the refined two-tone dual-skin system seen today—featuring perforated tiles arranged in a structured 45-degree diagonal repeat. Engineered to withstand Miami’s scorching sun, hurricanes, and to suit stringent safety regulations—this solution delivers depth, durability, and dynamic visual impact.
With Miami Design District’s working hours restricting installation to brief overnight windows, the façade remained concealed during the day—building anticipation for its final unveiling.

Now, at the heart of the Miami Design District, the façade blends art, architecture, and brand identity. Backlit MANOLO BLAHNIK logos glow against the patterned backdrop, while overhead spotlights enhance the sculptural effect—ensuring the boutique stands as an elegant yet bold landmark in this hub of design excellence.
