Our long-standing collaborations with Manolo Blahnik across Japan has led to the creation of a series of distinct retail environments – each one a careful balance of architectural precision, cultural reference, and brand expression.
At the heart of the stores is a conceptual framework of the “Bauhaus Sanatorium”. First introduced for the flagship in Tokyo’s luxury shopping destination of Omotesando, the concept pairs the clinical, utilitarian feel of a mid-century English sanatorium with the eccentric colour palette and geometry of Walter Gropius’ Bauhaus office – one of Mr Blahnik’s personal icons. The result is a design language that feels both rigorous and joyful, calm yet characterful.
This narrative continues through other key locations, including Nagoya Takashimaya, Kobe Hankyu, and most recently, the historically significant Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi, where the store finds its place within a department store designated a national important cultural property. Throughout the stores, the use of texture and colour of the upholstered furniture and custom rugs adds depth and warmth to our refined concept of quiet luxury. This tactile richness continues onto the vertical surfaces, where dramatic backdrops in deep velvet, inspired by traditional Japanese indigo dyeing techniques, create a striking contrast against the refined detailing of the footwear. The atmosphere of each concept is spirited but precise, mirroring the brand’s own balance of tradition and whimsy.
Throughout, our designs have been a tribute to Japan’s unique ability to reinterpret cultural forms with contemporary clarity. The material quality, craftsmanship, and architectural sensibility remain unmatched – making these spaces not just retail environments, but immersive expressions of the Manolo Blahnik spirit.
