You’ve worked closely with Nick and the team on brand positioning workshops. How do you see architecture and design shaping a company’s identity?

Architecture, particularly retail architecture, is much like the clothes you wear to a job interview—it’s the first impression, the immediate expression of who you are before a single word is spoken. It sets the tone, inviting people in and sparking an emotional connection. For a brand, this goes beyond aesthetics; it’s about coherence—ensuring that both the tangible (hard factors) and intangible (soft factors) elements align to create a seamless brand experience.

A well-designed retail or workshop space should not only reflect the brand’s identity but also enhance the entire customer journey. Every touchpoint—how customers enter, explore, engage, and ultimately connect with the space—should reinforce the brand’s personality and values. It’s not just about looking good; it’s about creating an immersive, intuitive experience that speaks directly to the people interacting with it, whether customers or staff.

What drew you to collaborate with Nick and the NLSA team, and how has your relationship evolved over the years?

My collaboration with Nick and NLSA began when one of my clients was creating a new kind of retail environment and workshop space. They initially received a quote from an architect who lacked experience in luxury retail, and I knew instantly that they needed someone who truly understood the nuances of brand storytelling through space. I had met Nick before and immediately trusted not only his expertise but also his way of working—his ability to listen deeply and translate a brand’s essence into architecture.

What stood out most was the simplicity and clarity of his process. From the very first meeting, through the quotation stage and onto execution, everything felt effortless yet deeply intentional. Nick’s humility, his intuitive understanding of clients, and his ability to create something beyond expectations were truly exceptional. Having worked with many architects, I can confidently say that Nick is different. He has no ego, no rigid signature style—he listens, he adapts, and he crafts spaces that are not only functional and beautiful but that truly embody the brand they serve.

Over the years, my admiration for Nick’s work has only grown. Seeing how he approaches each project with such precision, how he values both the customer journey and the staff experience, and how he seamlessly integrates these insights into his designs—it’s nothing short of magic.

You’ve introduced some incredible clients to Nick Leith-Smith Architecture + Design. What is it about the studio’s approach that resonates with people?

There’s something about Nick and his team that you feel immediately—it’s trust. When I introduce clients to NLSA, I always tell them to follow their gut feeling. And without fail, after a conversation with Nick, they know they are in the right hands.

What makes NLSA’s approach resonate so deeply is that they don’t just design spaces; they unlock the full potential of a brand. They listen—not just to what is said, but to what is felt. They translate abstract ideas, aspirations, and brand identities into spaces that are not only visually stunning but deeply functional. They create an emotional connection between the brand, the staff, and the customers.

Beyond that, Nick and his team understand that every business has its realities—budgets, timelines, operational needs—and they work within these parameters without ever compromising on creativity or impact. They don’t impose a “signature” aesthetic; instead, they elevate each brand’s unique DNA, crafting spaces that feel completely authentic yet unexpected. That ability to listen, adapt, and exceed expectations is why I trust them, and why my clients fall in love with their process and results.

From your perspective as a business consultant, what do you think sets NLSA’s design philosophy apart in today’s competitive landscape?

In today’s fast-paced and highly competitive market, many architecture and design firms focus on creating visually striking spaces. While aesthetics are important, what truly sets NLSA apart is their ability to design spaces that work *with* the brand, rather than simply looking beautiful. Their philosophy is rooted in understanding—not just the brand itself, but the people behind it, the customers who experience it, and the staff who bring it to life every day.

Nick and his team approach each project holistically, considering everything from customer decision journeys to sales ceremonies. They don’t just design for the eye; they design for the heart and the mind, ensuring that every element serves a purpose. There’s a depth to their process that many overlook—a deep respect for storytelling, an intuitive grasp of brand identity, and a commitment to creating spaces that are not just designed but *felt.*

Their ability to balance creativity with commercial reality is rare. They don’t just push for innovation for the sake of it; they craft solutions that make a tangible impact on a brand’s success. This combination of artistry, strategy, and humility is what makes NLSA not just another design studio but a true partner in building brands that leave a lasting impression.
