Prototyping in Motion: Bringing the Karndean Showroom’s Interactive Display Wall to Life

3 Nov 2025

Before a design moves from drawing to installation, there’s one crucial step that can make all the difference: prototyping. It’s where ideas are tested, refined, and made real.

Prototyping is the often-overlooked moment where design ideas are truly brought to life. Behind the scenes, concepts are tested and details are adjusted before production begins. It’s the bridge between imagination and execution, turning ambitious visions into installations that function flawlessly and inspire those who experience them.

For the new Karndean designflooring showroom in Design Centre Chelsea Harbour, the NLSA team developed a kinetic sample display that acts as both a partition and an interactive moodboard. Moveable panels backed with reeded glass allow samples to be slotted in from either side, creating a flexible, hands-on experience for clients as they explore materials and combinations.

To perfect the mechanism, the team collaborated with Axiom Retail Interiors to build a full prototype before installation. This allowed every element, from the internal track system to the ease of sliding motion, to be tested and refined. The result is a display that looks effortless in action but is built on precision and careful analysis of trial and error.

Prototyping is often where the most valuable insights emerge. It allows designers and makers to evaluate function, test materials, and identify improvements before full production begins. By inviting open dialogue, encouraging feedback, and fostering collective decision-making early in the process, prototyping not only refines the design but also builds confidence in the outcome – ensuring every finished piece performs beautifully and truly reflects the vision behind it.

Even small adjustments at this stage can prevent costly issues later and guarantee that the final result functions flawlessly in use. In retail design, where every detail matters and interaction is key, prototyping bridges the gap between concept and craft – transforming innovation into something both elegant and enduring.
