A Timeless Pattern, Reinvented : Tile Edition

19 Feb 2026

Checkerboard has long been a quiet constant in interiors – familiar, dependable and effortlessly stylish. But far from standing still, this classic pattern continues to evolve, finding new expression through colour and material. For 2026, this classic is stepping back into the spotlight, reimagined in tiles that are more tactile and considered than ever. In time for National Tile Day on Monday 23rd February, our Senior Interior Designer, Victoria Richmond, is spotlighting two of her favourites, showing how this timeless pattern can be refreshed for modern spaces.

Clay Collection from Mandarin Stone

Beautifully reminiscent of handmade terracotta, the Clay collection captures its natural warmth and character. Crafted in durable porcelain, it is perfectly suited to the demands of everyday living. Shown here in Clay Cotto and Clay White, the checkerboard pattern continues seamlessly from floor to wall, cleverly concealing plumbing while creating a cohesive, unified feel within the bathroom.

Bungalow 22 from Claybrook

Bungalow Tile from Claybrook is offered in a wide range of colours and formats, making it ideal for rethinking the classic grid through diagonal layouts, diamond patterns, smaller-scale checkerboards or even the addition of decorative borders. Shown here as the kitchen splash back, Pink Palace, Wine Time and Moorish White are arranged diagonally, giving a fresh twist on the classic checkerboard pattern.
